:: Photo by Pix Gremlin. Bob James mulai mempelajari piano pada usia 4 tahun. Awalnya ia begitu tertarik kepada musik klasik, khususnya Hindemith. Jazz baru kemudian memikatnya melalui rekaman-rekaman Stan Kenton, saxophonis Charlie Parker, trompetis Miles Davis dan Chet Baker serta pianis Oscar Peterson.

Bob James mulai dikenal publik saat ia tampil di Festival Jazz Notre Dame tahun 1962 di usianya ke 23, saat mana ia meraih gelar master untuk bidang Komposisi dari Universitas Michigan. Saat itu ia berhasil menarik minat seorang trompetis yang di kemudian hari akan dikenal sebagai produser rekaman ternama; Quincy Jones. Jones diakuinya sebagai orang yang paling berperan dalam membuka pintu sukses Bob James. Setelah pertunjukan ini ia pun kemudian diikat kontrak, berturut-turut oleh perusahaan-rekam Mercury dengan album trio be-bopnya berjudul Bold Conceptions pada tahun 1962 dan New Jazz Conception, serta dengan perusahaan rekam ESP melalui album grup -free-jazz(!)-nya- Explosions di tahun 1965. Disusul dengan menjadi pengarah musik vokalis jazz wanita ternama Sarah Vaughan hingga tahun 1968.

Namanya semakin populer saat ia gabung (berkat jasa Quincy Jones) dengan perusahaan-rekamnya Creed Taylor, CTI. Walaupun awalnya hanya sebagai penata musik, namun tidak lama kemudian ia pun menjabat produser dan pengisi instrumen keyboard bagi hampir semua artis yang berada di bawah label perusahaan-rekam CTI. Di antaranya; trompetis Freddie Hubbard, saxophonis Grover Washington, Jr., bassis Ron Carter, saxophonis Stanley Turrentine, flutis Hubert Laws dan banyak lagi lainnya. CTI terbukti memberikan andil yang sangat besar dalam keberhasilannya sebagai salah seorang pemusik rekaman yang paling diminati dan disegani.

Setelah menyelesaikan empat buah album ; One, Two, Three, dan Four; dengan CTI dalam kurun waktu 3 tahun (1974~1976), yang kemudian akan dirilis ulang oleh Columbia, ia pun mengikat kontrak dengan perusahaan-rekam Columbia. Dengan Columbia ia diberi jabatan Direktur Divisi A&R Progressive- mau tidak mau banyak melibatkannya dengan para pemusik pop ternama; di antaranya Paul Simon, Neil Diamond dan Kenny Loggins, yang semuanya berhasil ia kerjakan dengan baik. Dan majalah musik Cashbox memberi Penghargaa untuk kategori "Produser Jazz Terbaik Dasawarsa 70". Saat ia mendirikan perusahaan-rekamnya sendiri Tappan Zee (hak edar oleh Columbia) pada tahun 1977, produktivitasnya pun meningkat. Diawali dengan albumnya Heads. Dan sejak itu lebih dari lima solo albumnya berhasil melesat ke puncak tangga chart album jazz. Karya-ciptanya yang menghiasi filem seri tv ternama Taxi, "Angela" (dari album Touchdown, yang dirilis tahun 1978) bergaung di telinga jutaan pendengar dan penggemarnya. Karya-karya musiknya disukai banyak stasiun-stasiun radio pop sekalipun. Tak heran bila ini semua menggembirakannya mengingat ia memegang prinsip "menciptakan irama musik yang sebisa mungkin akan meraih semua pendengar di segala penjuru dan akan melewati batasan-batasan tak terlihat yang sadar atau tidak sadar direkayasa oleh pihak-pihak yang berkepentingan". Ia pun menggalang kerjasama dengan musisi-musisi ternama lainnya. Di antaranya tiga buah album dengan gitaris akustik Earl Klugh dan dua buah album bersama saxophonis alto David Sanborn. Kecintaan akan musik klasik pun kemabali ditekuninya melalui album Rameau yang dirilis tahun 1985, menampilkan karya-karya komponis barok abad 17, Jean-Phillipe Rameau.

Di penghujung tahun 1989, saat ia tengah menyelesaikan album solonya Grand Piano Canyon, yang di antaranya terdapat track-track yang mana ia meminta bantuan pemusik-pemusik gitaris Lee Ritenour, bassis Nathan East dan drummer Harvey Mason. Dalam penyelesaian track-track ini James yang menilai berkumpulnya Lee, Nathan dan Harvey (mengingat kesibukan luar-biasa masing-masing individu) merupakan hal yang langka, mencoba menerapkan konsep grup; artinya setiap pemusik diberi kebebasan yang sama dalam memberikan kontribusinya, walau track-track tersebut (di antaranya sebuah persembahan bagi Sarah Vaughan, "Wings For Sarah") akan berada dalam album yang menera nama diri Bob James. Dari situ terbentuklah Fourplay; kelompok musik pop-jazz rekaman yang hingga akhir tahun 2009 ini telah berhasil merilis sepuluh buah album.

Chuck Loeb resmi menggantikan Larry Carlton sebagai gitaris baru Fourplay

Management kelompok smooth-jazz Fourplay minggu lalu secara resmi mengumumkan pengunduran diri gitaris Larry Carlton. Sebagai penggantinya akan tampil Chuck Loeb.

Pernyataan resminya:

Fourplay has had the distinct privilege of enjoying the past 12 years of its 20 year history with legendary guitarist Larry Carlton.

As Larry takes his leave to delve further into his solo career, the band extends their heartfelt gratitude for his contributions and wishes him continued success in all his pursuits. Larry Carlton will remain an integral part of our musical family & legacy.

Fourplay now welcomes its newest member, multi-faceted virtuoso guitarist, Chuck Loeb.

Chuck Loeb adalah seorang gitaris yang tercatat kerap tampil dalam beragam gaya, walau yang utama adalah jazz. Solo-solo album Chuck Loeb secara umum cukup diminati oleh para pecinta musik smooth jazz.

Mulai bermain gitar di usia sebelas tahun. Usia enambelas tahun mulai meminati jazz, dengan berguru kepada para maestro gitar, seperti Jim Hall, Pat Metheny dan Joe Puma. Ini kemudian diikuti dengan pendidikan formal di Berklee College of Music di Boston, AS.

Awal kariernya ia banyak berkiprah di New York, di antaranya bersama Hubert Laws, Chico Hamilton dan saxophonist Joe Farrell. Tahun 1979 ia bergabung dengan kelompoknya Stan Getz selama dua tahun. Setelah itu ia aktif mengerjakan jingel dan musik soundtrack, baik sebagai pemain maupun sebagai komponis. Dari tahun 1985 hingga 1987 ia sempat bergabung dalam supergrup fusion Steps Ahead bersama Mike Mainieri dan Michael Brecker. Ia juga merupakan personil dari kelompok Petite Blonde, dimotori oleh saxophonist Bill Evans. Juga dalam kelompok Metro bersama Mitchell Forman. Gary Burton dan Dave Samuels merupakan nama-nama, bersama siapa Chuck Loeb sering tampil. Terakhir-akhir ini ia banyak menangani rekaman-rekaman Donald Harrison, Nelson Rangell, Larry Coryell, George Garzone dan Warren Bernhardt, sebagai produser.

Merilis album perdana My Shining Hour di tahun 1989, melalui perusahaan rekam Jepang, Pony Canyon Records. Sebelum bergabung dengan Fourplay ini, ia baru saja menyelesaikan turnya ke Spanyol bersama grupnya yang beranggotakan Josh Dion pada drum, Brian Killeen pada bass, dan Matt King pada keyboard.

Terakhir Chuck Loeb melalui perusahaan rekam Heads Up International telah merilis album solo terbarunya Between 2 World, yang di antaranya didukung oleh pemusik-pemusik Eric Marienthal, Will Lee, Dave Weckl, Gerald Veasley, Brian Culbertson, dan lain-lain.

Terhitung bulan Februari 2010 ini Chuck Loeb secara resmi akan bergabung bersama supergrup smooth jazz Fourplay, menggantikan gitaris Larry Carlton, yang kabarnya akan lebih berkonsentrasi pada proyek-proyek solonya. Chuck Loeb akan tampil pertama kali bersama Fourplay di atas panggung pada tanggal 18 April mendatang di The Seabreeze Jazz Festival di Destin Florida, AS.

:: Photo: Juan Carlos Hernandez. Roberta Gambarini adalah seorang penyanyi jazz pendatang baru yang namanya saat kini tengah melejit dan cukup disegani, baik oleh para kritisi, pemusik senior, dan tentu saja para penggemarnya.

Dilahirkan di kota Turino, Italia. Mulai mempelajari alat tiup klarinet di usia sebelas tahun. Karier di dunia vokal ia awali saat ia berusia tujuh belas tahun, dengan menyanyi di klab-klab jazz yang bertebaran di wilayah Utara Italia. Baru setahun kemudian, setelah ia hijrah ke kota Milano, namanya mulai dikenal di negaranya. Berkat ilmu yang diperolehnya di Berklee College of Music di kota Boston, AS dan mencoba peruntungannya di kota New York, namanya pun mulai dikenal di daratan Amerika.

Terlebih sejak dirilis album perdananya di daratan Amerika, Easy To Love pada tahun 2006, yang langsung menarik perhatian para kritikus musik dan pemusik jazz yang lebih mengidentikkan musik jazz sebagai warisan seni Afrika-Amerika yang tak ternilai, yang semakin hari semakin menyusut penghargaan masyarakat musik di Amerika, yang kini umumnya lebih menyukai musik pop elektronik dan musik country.

Berawal dengan mencoba menyanyikan setiap solo dari permainan instrumen dari tiga maestro; Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Stitt dan Sonny Rollins pada album Dizzy Gillespie Sonny Side Up (Verve, 1957) yang komplek dan rumit ini, Gambarini berhasil membawakannya dengan penuh penguasaan, akurat dan santai. Hal ini yang membuat salah seorang legenda hidup dalam musik jazz, Hank Jones secara terbuka, walau terkesan berlebihan, menobatkan Roberta Gambarini sebagai pendatang baru terbaik dalam dunia vokal jazz untuk kurun waktu lima puluh tahun terakhir, atau dengan kata lain, Gambarini akan hadir sebagai pengganti para vokalis jazz diva seperti Ella Fitzgerald dan Sarah Vaughan.

Pendeknya, Roberta Gambarini mampu mengangkat profesi penyanyi jazz ke tingkatan yang, kalau boleh dikatakan, lebih tinggi. Mungkin ini dikarenakan ia sudah berpikir dan berlagu layaknya seorang pemain instrumen jazz. Salahsatu pengaruh terbesar dalam menjadikan ia seperti itu adalah; Louis Armstrong, orang pertama yang memiliki kemampuan bersolo ria dalam setiap kesempatan, baik dengan trumpetnya maupun dengan vokalnya, dalam sejarah musik dunia.

Gambarini tidak hanya ingin terdengar seperti seorang pemain instrumen, tapi ia telah "berpikir" seperti layaknya para pemusik jazz besar berpikir; Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker dan John Coltrane.

Gambarini hijrah ke Amerika Serikat pada tahun 1998, di tahun yang sama ia meraih juara ke-tiga pada Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Vocal Competition, di bawah Jane Monheit dan Tierney Sutton. Hal yang banyak menimbulkan pertanyaan di benak para pengikut dan pengamat perkembangan khasanah jazz vokal saat itu.

Gambarini pernah tampil tour dunia bersama para nama besar jazz seperti Herbie Hancock, Christian McBride, dan Toots Thielemans. Pada tahun 2004, ia mulai tampil dalam tur Dizzy Gillespie All Star Big Band, tampil bersama dengan James Moody, Frank Wess, Jimmy Heath, Paquito de Rivera, Roy Hargrove, dan lain lain. Tahun 2006 dan 2007 ia mulai tampil bersama trionya, juga dengan Hank Jones trio. Tahun 2006, Groovin High label merilis debut albumnya di daratan Amerika, Easy to Love, yang berhasil memperoleh nominasi sebagai Best Jazz Album pada Penghargaan Grammy tahun 2007. DI tahun ini pula ia dinominasikan sebagai Penyanyi Jazz Terbaik pada Anugrah Jazz Italia (Italian Jazz Awards).

Jazz Break Revival XX

Klab Jazz, bekerjasama dengan B. P. Bumi Sangkuriang dan Melinda Hospital kembali akan menyelenggarakan pertemuan bulanan Jazz Break Revival. Kali ini memasuki Edisi ke-XX.

Pada edisi ke XX ini, Jazz Break Revival kembali akan menghadirkan grup-grup jazz kota Bandung, beberapa di antaranya adalah mereka yang "gagal" memperoleh tempat di kompetisi untuk main di Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2010.

Hari Minggu, 21 Februari 2010, bisa dipastikan akan menjadi suatu hari yang sangat bersejarah bagi Klab Jazz. Klab Jazz yang selama hampir enam tahun malang melintang aktif berperan di dunia perkembangan musik jazz Indonesia, khususnya kota Bandung, sekarang telah memiliki sebuah Sekertariat.

Pertanyaan akan timbul.
"Memiliki Sekertariat?, lah selama ini memang apa belum ada"?
Ya, selama ini memang belum ada! Kegiatan-kegiatan Klab Jazz pada tahun-tahun awal memang dikordinir melalui pertemuan di Common Room, Jl. Kyai Gede Utama no. 8, dan sejak Klab Jazz mulai surut aktivitasnya di Common Room, semua kegiatan (umumnya penyelenggaraan pertunjukan jazz) dikordinir di kediaman sang Koordinator Utama. Sesekali ada kalanya kita kumpul di warung makan atau cafe pinggir jalan.
Sejak acara reguler Jazz Break Revival mulai diselenggarakan pada bulan April 2008, sebagian besar ide dan rencana kegiatan disosialisasikan di sekitar acara tersebut di Bumi Sangkuriang, walau penyelenggaraannya hanya sebulan sekali.

Saat Klab Jazz mulai berfacebook pada bulan Agustus 2008, (atas inisiatif rekan Deden Achmad Chaeruddin), praktis semua kendala-kendala untuk "mempertemukan" ide, gagasan dan rencana hampir keseluruhannya dilakukan via "jejaring sosial" ini; facebook!

Hingga saat ini facebook Klab Jazz telah mencapai 5 (lima) buah account; 3 (tiga) account profile, satu account fan page dan satu account Facebook Group.

Dalam perjalanannya Klab Jazz tidak jarang bertemu dengan para simpatisan atau mitra potensial yang menawarkan sebuah kavling miliknya untuk dijadikan sekertariat Klab Jazz. Namun hampir keseluruhanya, karena satu dan lain alasan tidak ditindak-lanjuti. Ada satu masa, pada tahun 2005, di mana Klab Jazz bahkan sudah bebenah cukup jauh untuk menjadikan sebuah kavling kecil di Jl. Sukajadi; dana sudah cukup banyak dikeluarkan untuk merenovasi sedikit ruangannya, di antaranya dengan menggunakan jasa seorang seniman rupa asal Jerman untuk mendekor ruangannya, tiba-tiba pihak tempat membatalkan tawarannya secara sepihak!

Melalui pertemanan Andi Triana, seorang aktivis Klab Jazz fanatik yang sempat sangat hiperaktif hingga tahun 2007, dengan salah seorang teman karibnya di masa lampau, Klab Jazz pun ditawari untuk menempati sebuah tempat di Jalan Ciung no. 18 sebagai Sekertariat Resmi Klab Jazz.

Yang awalnya hanya ditawari sebuah ruang, yang Klab Jazz nilai cukup untuk dijadikan sebagai titik pusat koordinasi kegiatan-kegiatan Klab Jazz, minimal sebagai Alamat Surat Resmi Klab Jazz (selama ini masih ditujukan ke alamat sang Koordinator Utama), tawaran pun melebar dan melebar ..., sampai satu titik Klab Jazz was-was dalam menjawabnya. Kuatir bila kita sambut tawaran-tawaran tersebut akan berakibat pada keharusan Klab Jazz memberikan kontribusi dalam semua biaya perawatan tempatnya. Hal yang sangat lumrah dan juga tercetus dalam pikiran teman-teman di Klab Jazz. Namun permasalahannya, Klab Jazz tidak memiliki dana apapun, bahkan proyeksi perolehan dana ke depan pun belum terbayangkan. Memang tidak sedikit yang pernah mengatakan kalau Klab Jazz telah "terjebak" dengan visi-misinya; non profit. Perihal ini akan ada tulisan tersendiri..

... pendeknya, resmilah Klab Jazz memiliki sekertariatnya sendiri.

Dan pada hari Minggu tanggal 21 Februari ini keberadaan Sekertariat Klab Jazz pun diresmikan dan dipublikasikan. Memang tidak ada gunting pita, apalagi potong tumpeng, tapi dengan sebuah kegiatan yang jauh lebih serius, menggunakan Sekertariat ini untuk PERTEMUAN KEGIATAN PERTAMA, berupa meeting dengan Syaharani dan rekan-rekannya dari Es:qief.

Hadir pada "hari peresmian" ini: "pelaku utama";Andi Triana dan bung Agung, pendatang baru di Klab Jazz;Raisya Kharisma Indrani, dan Sang Fotografer;Mia Damayanti Sjahir. Malamnya Deden Achmad Chaeruddin, "sang provokator" Kampoeng jazz Unpad, pun menyempatkan diri untuk hadir

Mudah-mudahan keberadaan Sekertariat Klab Jazz ini akan jauh lebih memudahkan setiap gerak langkah Klab Jazz dalam merealisasikan Visi dan Misinya. Amin.

Peniup saxophone asal Amerika, yang sejak tahun '70an aktif berkarya hingga saat ini. Beragam format musik pernah ia coba. Awal Maret ini David Murray akan tampil 2 (dua) malam di Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival.

Pendidikan dasar perihal harmoni dalam musik ia peroleh dari sang ibu, yang juga seorang pianis di sebuah Gereja pantekosta. Mulai bermain saxophone sejak usia 9 tahun, dan tertarik dengan musik r&b saat ia berusia 12 tahun. Pelajaran formalnya ia peroleh dari Pamona College di Los Angeles, bersama Stanley Crouch dan pianis Margaret Kohn selama dua tahun.

Awalnya orang banyak mengenal Murray sebagai seorang pemusik yang banyak berkiprah di dunia musik jazz. Albert Ayler dan Archie Shepp merupakan dua pemusik free jazz yang banyak mempengaruhi warna musiknya. Namun dengan berjalannya waktu, warna musiknya mulai meluas hingga akhirnya memainkan juga post bop.


Berbeda dengan peniup saxophone dunia lainnya, ia dengan sengaja mencoba untuk tidak terpengaruh oleh peniup saxophone besar John Coltrane. Para peniup saxophone yang ia lebih coba pelajari dan dalami justru adalah para peniup saxophone dari era mainstream seperti; Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster dan Paul Gonsalves. Walau bukan berarti ia tidak menyukai Coltrane. Ini terbukti dari salah satu proyek rekamannya Octet Plays Trane, sebuah tribute untuk John Coltrane pada tahun 1999.

Tahun 1975 ia hijrah ke kota New York dan langsung memimpin grupnya sendiri, dan secara berkala bermain di benua Eropa, sekaligus mulai mengeluarkan album-album rekamannya. Akhir tahun '70an ia tercatat bermain dalam Music Revelation Ensemble'nya James Blood Ulmer, sebuah grrup beraliran free funk harmolodic, juga dalam Jack DeJohnette Special Edition dan di Wold Saxophone Quartet, kelompok terakhir ini adalah kelompok yang ia dirikan bersama Oliver Lake, Julius Hemphill dan Hamiet Bluiett.

Dalam riwayat rekamannya ia tercatat sempat bermain dalam album-albumnya Henry Threadgill, James Blood Ulmer, Olu Dara, Tani Tabbal, Butch Morris, Donal Fox, McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Ed Blackwell, Johnny Dyani, dan Steve McCall.

Tehnik sirkulasi nafas yang dikuasainya mampu menghasilkan suatu tiupan saxophone sangat panjang yang mengagumkan. Dan ini mungkin merupakan salahsatu daya tarik penampilannya.

"We're having a funky good time," bassist Christian McBride proudly announces with a characteristic broad smile—his voice joyous and resonant, as deep and dark as the sound of his instrument. Standing in his honored place, rear and center on the bandstand of the Village Vanguard, McBride has good reason for his unabashed expression of delight. He's celebrating the release of his latest CD, the excellent Kind of Brown (Mack Avenue), with a weeklong engagement leading his new hard swinging acoustic quintet, Inside Straight, at the fabled jazz mecca, affording him not just the opportunity to indulge himself in his favorite pastime—playing his own beloved upright bass—but also a most welcome respite from his hectic touring schedule as one of the world's busiest musicians.

McBride is much more than the first-call bassist on both the jazz and pop music scenes. His impressive resumé ranges from early stints with Bobby Watson, Roy Hargrove and Joshua Redman on to appearances with nearly every jazz giant of his era—Freddie Hubbard, Ray Brown, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock and McCoy Tyner, among the many. He's also worked with popular artists such as Queen Latifah, Regina Belle, Michael Bublé, Linda Ronstadt and Joss Stone and played hiphop with the Roots, featuring his Philly contemporary ?uestlove. But it is jazz that remains at the center of his expanding universe, not just as a player, but also as a dedicated educator and high profile administrator, work that is commendable considering the demands these 'extramusical' duties make on his tightly stretched timetable.

Since his first days in 2000 as Artistic Director of Jazz Aspen, the not-for-profit organization whose mission is to present and preserve jazz, McBride has continually devoted time to educating young musicians and the general public about the music. "The reason why I do it," he explains, "is because when I was in high school, growing up in Philly, there were so many cats who took time out of their busy schedules to come and do workshops. Guys like Kenny Barron and the Heath Brothers, Wynton, Branford [Marsalis], they were always coming to Philly. Bobby Watson. I think that had a direct result on my wanting to be a jazz musician and that's why I always promised that if I was ever in that same position to do some workshops or teach that I would do it."

It was at Jazz Aspen that McBride began his working relationship with the saxophonist and scholar Loren Schoenberg, his co-director of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem. He explains, "In 2001, Jim Horowitz, the CEO of Jazz Aspen, thought maybe we should bring in an educational director; have an artistic director and an educational director. He asked, 'What do you think about Loren?' And I said, 'Sure, Loren would be great. He's really good at managing that kind of stuff.' So Loren came on board at Jazz Aspen and after working together every summer for a couple of years, he said to me, 'I just started working with the Jazz Museum in Harlem. Would you be interested in working with me up there?' And I said, 'Yeah, sure!'" And that's kind of how that happened."

"The main thing about Christian's talents, his many talents, is that they all flow from his personality," Schoenberg says. "The bass playing that we love, no matter what context that it's in, really just flows from his wonderful personality. He's one of the best people people that I've ever met. He knows how to deal with everybody and his role at the museum is really kind of tailored, hopefully like a fine suit, around these abilities. He's on the road most of the time, so he's kind of morphed into our traveling ambassador, but when he's in town he's there, conducting interviews, teaching classes." In December, during his time 'off' from the road he'll be featured in a Christian McBride Month at the museum. "He's so modest that usually he wants to talk about someone else or interview someone else, but this particular time we're devoting four weeks to him," explains Schoenberg. The bassist will be conducting the museum's regular Tuesday night Jazz For Curious Listeners sessions, including evenings devoted to the bass, film clips featuring him with different artists, the music of his various bands and a night of playing his favorite recordings. "That'll be fun," he says.

McBride has also enjoyed his soon-to-be-completed tenure as Creative Chair for Jazz with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. "It's been a fantastic four-year run. It's really been a dream gig," the bassist beams. "I get into a think tank and dream about projects I'd like to put together and I would say that the majority of the stuff I was able to dream actually happened, like working with James Brown. We did the Mingus Epitaph. We did a big tribute to Horace Silver, which I think was one of his last public appearances. We did a big tribute to Ray Brown. We had a Miles Davis-Gil Evans tribute night, where we had Terence [Blanchard] and Nicholas [Payton] play and Miles Evans [Gil's son], too. Vince Mendoza conducted the members of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. So it's been a fantastic run doing all of that kind of stuff out there. I even wound up being Queen Latifah's musical director for the summer. When she put out her second jazz album, we had her play at the Hollywood Bowl and since she was, as she put it, 'just a baby at this jazz stuff,' she had me be her music director for the whole summer."

In the beginning of the year to come McBride will be concentrating on touring with Inside Straight. The group, whose name was chosen from audience contest submissions at a performance by the band at the 2008 Monterey Jazz Festival, succeeds the leader's eclectic ensemble, the Christian McBride Band (CMB), which he describes stylistically as "an 'all in' band—you know kind of a little bit of everything." Of the new unit he says, "I just felt that after nine years with CMB I wanted to do something that was a little more clearly straight-ahead, more focused in dealing with one hundred percent acoustic music and coming out of the tradition." The band's debut recording, Kind of Brown, features saxophonist Steve Wilson, pianist Eric Reed, drummer Carl Allen and the phenomenal young vibraphonist Warren Wolf.

"The whole band sort of centers around him," McBride says proudly of the youthful mallet man, who he first met when Wolf was a 20-year-old student at Jazz Aspen. "He played like that back then," the bassist exclaims. "He knew all of my music. He had all of my CDs up unto that point and he knew almost every song off of those CDs so I thought, 'Man, this guy is serious!' I told him then that one of these days we would play together. That it might take a little while, but I'm going to make sure that you and I get to play together on a regular basis. So some years later, when we played the Vanguard, I called Warren and he's been the mainstay of the band ever since."

"Playing with Christian has always been one of my biggest dreams," Wolf says. "From the first time that I ever heard him, which was on an Antonio Hart record called [ironically] For The First Time and then from his first record called Gettin' To It. I've always admired what he does on the bass because he is a true monster. His timing, his rhythm and the way he walks. The basslines he walks, as far as choice of notes. He's always there. Plus it's very technical. He gets around the upright bass kind of similar to the way that most electric bass players play. And he is a wonderful electric bassist, too. You know he's very exciting. He puts on a good show—always making the crowd have a good time."

Wolf is certainly right about McBride always putting on a good show. For the week at the Vanguard, with pianist Peter Martin replacing Eric Reed, he had audiences whooping and hollering wildly at his continuous feats of technical wizardry, with a steady stream of his colleagues coming through each night to admire the intense swinging music. The bassist's humorous side was particularly well displayed on the last night of the Vanguard gig. He joked about being conflicted because Sunday night at the Vanguard is always a lot of fun because it's the night that traditionally the most musicians come out, but that since they don't pay to get in, it cuts into the band's bread, getting a big laugh from the packed house that included a slew of players.

McBride's next recording for Mack Avenue will document a major project by the bassist. "I wrote this piece call 'The Movement Revisited,' which is for gospel choir, big band and four narrators," he says. "It's basically music that I put to the words of Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali and Martin Luther King, Jr. We played it at Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA last year and we're going to record it live at the Second Ebenezer Baptist Church in Detroit in February. When I first wrote it, which was ten years ago, we did full gospel choir and just a quartet. When I started working with the LA Philharmonic, I was able to rewrite it for a big band and gospel choir. And we had four actors come in and recite the words—Wendell Pierce did Martin Luther King, Loretta Devine read Rosa Parks, Carl Lumley read Malcolm X and James Avery read Ali." A work of such cultural significance is exactly what one could expect from a man whose dedication to the music extends beyond his own remarkable playing.
