Peniup saxophone asal Amerika, yang sejak tahun '70an aktif berkarya hingga saat ini. Beragam format musik pernah ia coba. Awal Maret ini David Murray akan tampil 2 (dua) malam di Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival.

Pendidikan dasar perihal harmoni dalam musik ia peroleh dari sang ibu, yang juga seorang pianis di sebuah Gereja pantekosta. Mulai bermain saxophone sejak usia 9 tahun, dan tertarik dengan musik r&b saat ia berusia 12 tahun. Pelajaran formalnya ia peroleh dari Pamona College di Los Angeles, bersama Stanley Crouch dan pianis Margaret Kohn selama dua tahun.

Awalnya orang banyak mengenal Murray sebagai seorang pemusik yang banyak berkiprah di dunia musik jazz. Albert Ayler dan Archie Shepp merupakan dua pemusik free jazz yang banyak mempengaruhi warna musiknya. Namun dengan berjalannya waktu, warna musiknya mulai meluas hingga akhirnya memainkan juga post bop.


Berbeda dengan peniup saxophone dunia lainnya, ia dengan sengaja mencoba untuk tidak terpengaruh oleh peniup saxophone besar John Coltrane. Para peniup saxophone yang ia lebih coba pelajari dan dalami justru adalah para peniup saxophone dari era mainstream seperti; Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster dan Paul Gonsalves. Walau bukan berarti ia tidak menyukai Coltrane. Ini terbukti dari salah satu proyek rekamannya Octet Plays Trane, sebuah tribute untuk John Coltrane pada tahun 1999.

Tahun 1975 ia hijrah ke kota New York dan langsung memimpin grupnya sendiri, dan secara berkala bermain di benua Eropa, sekaligus mulai mengeluarkan album-album rekamannya. Akhir tahun '70an ia tercatat bermain dalam Music Revelation Ensemble'nya James Blood Ulmer, sebuah grrup beraliran free funk harmolodic, juga dalam Jack DeJohnette Special Edition dan di Wold Saxophone Quartet, kelompok terakhir ini adalah kelompok yang ia dirikan bersama Oliver Lake, Julius Hemphill dan Hamiet Bluiett.

Dalam riwayat rekamannya ia tercatat sempat bermain dalam album-albumnya Henry Threadgill, James Blood Ulmer, Olu Dara, Tani Tabbal, Butch Morris, Donal Fox, McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Ed Blackwell, Johnny Dyani, dan Steve McCall.

Tehnik sirkulasi nafas yang dikuasainya mampu menghasilkan suatu tiupan saxophone sangat panjang yang mengagumkan. Dan ini mungkin merupakan salahsatu daya tarik penampilannya.
